Further to the International Fair on Logistics and Foreign Trade (FILCE),, Terminal Cerros de Valparaíso (TCVAL) came first in the Green Leaf 2018 Prize, arranged by COMACO, thanks to various environmentally-friendly measures it has recently implemented on its facilities.
The jury recognized TCVAL as a port company, a traditional hallmark, with a different approach to what is strictly related to environmental action; it has made great achievements in changing the organizational culture of its workers, and has also implemented various initiatives, such as the recovery of waste generated by port operations, which is processed to eventually manufacture fixtures with the collaboration of local recycling companies.
Furthermore, worth noting was the installation of LED lights in the Breakwater, reducing energy consumption by 40%, and implementing an oil microfiltering system for machinery used in port operations, extending their useful life and reducing consumption by 58%, with a positive impact on the environment.
At the same time, the effort made to quantify greenhouse gas was positively assessed, as part of the “Huella Chile” governmental program, which recognized TCVAL in November 2017.
María Emilia Correa, Co-Founder of “Sistema B” in Chile, a renowned intellectual in Latin America, was in charge of handing over the award to the winners. On behalf of the company, the prize was received by Mario Cárdenas, TCVAL Engineer specialized in Risk Prevention, Quality & the Environment, along with Noel Balaresque, in charge of Security, Risk Prevention and the Environment at TCVAL.
“This achievement is a huge incentive to continue our task; we are a relatively new company which, from the start, has sought to do things the best way possible, and this includes respect for the environment”, stated Noel Balaresque, Head of Security, Risk Prevention and the Environment at TCVAL.
In turn, Mario Cárdenas, TCVAL Engineer specialized in Risk Prevention, Quality & the Environment, called upon other companies to join them in caring for the environment, stating that “these types of measures are a great help in gathering more agents working in favor of the environment, which is why COMACO’s contribution is so valuable in this regard”.
Finally, Soledad Lama, Partner and General Manager of Comaco S.P.A., indicated that “We congratulate TCVAL for its environmentally-friendly project and are handing over this Green Leaf as a symbol of how important it is to generate awareness as to the responsibility we all have for global issues related to climate change, waste and the shortage of water. All these initiatives add up to bring a solution, and this is enabled if we are able to share them as a source of inspiration for others, to create their own internal improvements”.
